A Guide to Collecting Petunia Seeds: Save, Share, and Sow

I was captivated by the vivid beauty of a vibrant purple petunia this year in my planters and hanging baskets. I decided I want to replicate this breathtaking display next year, and the year after that, without relying on a trip to the garden center. In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through the process of collecting petunia seeds so you can save, share, and sow them for a future full of colourful blooms.


Typically, petunias are annuals, meaning they last for just one growing season. However, I live in Zone 6a, where the blooming season stretches from June to the first frost.


In this gardening guide, I'll show you how to save the seeds from those petunias you loved last year. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy their beautiful blooms in your garden year after year. Step 1: Choose the Right Petunias

Begin with healthy and vigorous petunia plants. Select those with the characteristics you want to preserve, whether it's a specific colour, size, or fragrance.



Step 2: Wait for the Right Time

Petunias are known for their long blooming season, but to collect seeds, you'll need to wait until the flowers have faded and the seed pods have formed. This typically happens towards the end of the growing season. You will start to see small cone shaped pods forming.





Step 3: Identify Seed Pods

Look for small, elongated seed pods at the base of the faded flowers. These pods contain the petunia seeds you want to collect. They'll start off green and gradually turn brown as they mature.



Step 4: Prepare Your Tools

Step 5: Harvesting the Seed Pods

Carefully snip the seed pods from the plant using your scissors or shears. Make sure the pods are fully dry before harvesting to ensure the seeds are mature.

Take each seed pod and gently break it open over a clean surface, like a piece of paper. You'll find tiny petunia seeds inside. Be patient; this step can be a bit delicate.

Step 7: Removing the Seeds

To remove any remaining bits of seed pod or chaff, transfer the seeds to a fine mesh sieve or a tea strainer and gently shake it over a clean sheet of paper. This will separate the seeds from any debris.


Step 8: Label and Store

Place the cleaned petunia seeds into a paper envelope or small glass container. Don't forget to label the container with the petunia variety and the date of collection. Storing seeds in a cool, dark place will help maintain their viability.
